CONTROL Resonant story overview and campaign premise

The story and campaign premise of CONTROL Resonant: why Dylan Faden launches into a warped Manhattan, the threats he faces, and the runtime.

What is CONTROL Resonant’s story? It centers on Dylan Faden, the brother of the first game’s Jesse, who spent years confined by the Federal Bureau of Control. When a cosmic entity begins rewriting reality, the bureau that imprisoned him pushes him to the front line. The campaign premise, its threats, and its length are covered below.

The premise

After years confined by the Bureau, Dylan is sent into a New York City being rewritten by a mysterious cosmic entity. The story tasks him with containing that entity and the threats that spill across the city, while also searching for his missing sister, Jesse Faden, the current FBC director. Remedy frames his arc as moving from a former test subject to a superweapon, and the emotional core is his search for his sister and keeping his humanity through the crisis.

In the narrative, Jesse once walked into the Oldest House to confront what was inside, and the sequel flips that direction: Dylan must now leave the House and walk out to stop what is beyond it. It is a deliberate inversion of the first game’s framing, making this the story of the other sibling.

The threats

The enemies in the story are a mix of the cursed and the entirely new:

  • The Hiss, the paranatural corruption from the first game, spilling out of the Oldest House
  • The Mold, a microbial invader that Remedy describes as an invasive micro-organism
  • The main cosmic entity that is altering the rules of reality itself
  • Other twisted paranatural threats that Dylan meets zone by zone

Manhattan’s distinct zones are each feeling the reshaping differently, which is how the campaign visits some of the map’s handcrafted areas as it plays out.

Runtime and pacing

Lead designer Sergey Mohov said the core main route is about 30 hours, and finishing the larger world, major side content, and achievements runs closer to 50. That makes CONTROL Resonant a substantial role-playing campaign rather than a short narrative game. Each of the city’s zones and the contained dungeons (like the Sinkhole and the city’s Metro-related breach) contribute to that length.

New players are covered

For players who never touched the first Control, Remedy includes a storyline recap in the main menu, so you can start here without replaying the original. The campaign ahead of launch was also marketed as approachable for newcomers.
